2. Supernatural anime trailer
My shallow side thinks it's a shame that they went for such a harsh style for the art. I wasn't hoping for sparkly eyes and floating flowers or anything, but characters in shounen anime can still be pretty! *eyes Prince of Tennis* (or even Eyeshield21! or Whistle! the list goes on!) Yeah, yeah, I'm one of those people who think Dean should look like a bishounen. But even if you don't agree with me on that point, you have to agree that this is a terrible design for John Winchester (Mary looks pretty good, if a bit on the young side -- especially compared to John!). Complaints aside, though, I'm still looking forward to the anime. ;)

3. I'm going to go gorge myself on extra-butter popcorn now. I have a feeling my stomach won't thank me when it gets coated in a thick layer of buttery oil. Mmm, buttery oil. :>

I was really surprised by the anime trailer. Given Supernatural's fanbase is mostly female, you'd think they'd go more in the direction of, say, Death Note, which is shounen but still brings the pretty.

And I hadn't seen John's character designs yet D: DNW Maybe JDM is too famous now for them to be able to get away with designing a character based on him?

Right, Death Note! How could I have forgotten? That's a great example of a shounen anime (and manga) where the main characters look pretty, but not in a sparkly-big-eyes sort of way. I think Death Note was produced by the same company that is producing SPN, so idk why they chose such an unappealing style for SPN. :\

That's a good point. That's probably why anime!Sam and Dean look so different from Jared and Jensen (perhaps if they made Dean a bishounen, they'd have to pay Jensen extra ;)).

At Otakon, I got to ask the founder of Madhouse (the studio making the Supernatural anime) about the series. I told him I liked the character designs. He said they wanted to keep the essence of the live action characters, but they wanted it to look anime style. I'm pretty sure he's expecting not everyone will be pleased, but he seemed happy that I knew about the project.

Since it's from Madhouse, I wasn't expecting bishounen. (He also explained that Warner approached Madhouse about making the show, not the other way around.)

Madhouse did produce the Death Note anime, and I really liked the art style they used (Raito and L can be considered as bishounen ;)). The only other anime I recognize from Madhouse are shoujo series, so I can't really compare their art to SPN's. I'm surprised that Warner came up with the idea to turn SPN into an anime -- have there been many other English live-action shows to be turned into anime?

As far as I know, SPN is the first TV show that a Japanese company has been asked to animate. (There may be something else, but I don't know it.)

One of the other things that looked cool is the Marvel and Madhouse collaboration (http://marvel.com/news/all.8994.marvel_and_madhouse_collaboration_a_big_hit). There's so much more you can do in anime than in live action.

that's what was pinging my ... something 'dar! Still, coming straight out and saying "I want your cherry" complete with the *___* face and everything is... not my usual style, I must say. I like to think I'm a little more subtle than that :P Which is, possibly, why the strawberry could have worked, if I hadn't started analysing it.

ALSO. WTF, man. John and Mary don't even go with their characterizations and bahh! DO NOT LIKE. I'm not too much of an anime fan, and I have to say the art was definitely not what I was expecting. Harsh, like you said, is a good word for it. My thinky thoughts...IDK. We'll see.

John is so skeevy looking! D: And Mary is pretty enough, but, yeah, I don't think she really matches her characterization from the show either. :( Shounen art tends to be less "pretty", but the style used here is a bit harsher (and more...bleak?) than what I was expecting.
