dictionary.com is my new best friend

I have devised a way to make studying GRE vocab seem...enticing. I'm not sure how long this method will remain effective (read: how long it will remain entertaining and novel) and I can never allow my study notes to fall into the hands of, well, anyone, but hey, as long as it works... :Db
The slightly annoying thing is, I'm so conscious of this LEARN-NEW-VOCAB thing that I will automatically stop in the middle of a story (in the middle of the sentence, usually!), whether it'd be a book, fic, or even audiobook, and jot down and look up the unknown word. I can't even make myself read to the end of the paragraph and double back for the word because my brain will be blaring, "LOOK UP THE WORD NAO NAO NAO". Talk about breaking the flow of the story! (and let me tell you, it gets especially irritating when you're reading the NC-17 part of an NC-17 fic)
Is this a permutation or combination question:
Brooke wants to hang three paintings in a row on her wall. She has six paintings to choose from. How many arrangements of paintings on the wall can she create?
I think it's combination, because order shouldn't matter, but my book says the opposite. D:

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away :D

I wonder what it would be like to sleep on a $159.99 pillow.

Probably the same as sleeping on a $9.99 pillow. :/
What's your favourite colour?

Date: 2008-08-29 07:20 am (UTC)Ugh, it's been too long since I've done any math questions. Not that I'm even good at P&C in the first place. Sorry. D:
What's with the pillow?
And for the meme: what's the first thing you'll look at a person?

Date: 2008-08-29 08:31 am (UTC)And haha I used to do that all the time when I was young...too lazy now, though. I've been doing that with Chinese, though, so I learn new words :3333
And I would have guessed permutation. It says in a row, then asks for arrangements, so there's an order involved and thus permutation. Wow, you are studying so hard ;_; You should come to Europe with me~~~~~~~ ◕3◕
QUESTION: WHAT KIND OF PANTIES DO YOU WEAR. (This is something I should know about you if we were roommates :P WHICH WE MAY BE, BTW, IF YOU COME TO EUROPE WITH ME. OR AUSTRALIA.)

Date: 2008-08-29 08:26 pm (UTC)Sears has this sale on pillows and their range is apparently from 19.99 to 159.99 and I was just like, dude, I can get probably a futon for 159.99 (or possibly not, but, you know). IKEA has pillows for different sleeping positions, which I thought was kind of cool -- back-sleepers, stomach-sleepers, side-sleepers, side-and-back-sleepers...and they all cost less than $100, thankfully.
Red! :D:D

Date: 2008-08-29 08:29 pm (UTC)That's exactly what I used to do until recently, haha -- I've picked up quite a few words that way, but I can only vaguely define them, which isn't good enough for the GREs. X3 So have to resort to the dictionary now, and find out the full meaning, sigh!
Sears has a sale on pillows and apparently the range is from $19.99 to $159.99 and I'm wondering what can possibly make a single pillow worth over $100. XD
Mmm, hair, I think. Or any sort of aberration on their face, if they have any. XD;;;;

Date: 2008-08-29 08:34 pm (UTC)It's a good (and educational!) thing to do...but so time consuming! And ruins the flow!
Hmm, that does makes sense... I was originally thinking that was similar to all those ice cream flavours questions, which are all about combinations. *flails a bit* I'm going to fail my heritage by bombing the math section. X3;;; And ugh, don't even get me started on the analogies. Haha, I should just go to Europe with you! I'm so not studying that hard for the GREs and I really should, but I don't feeeeel like it.
Um um cotton?? Australia? :O:O Why Australia now?

Date: 2008-08-29 08:50 pm (UTC)For me, I almost never look up words... *relies on context clues and sort of GUESS what the word means* I fail as a good student. XD;;;;
Question: Hm... have you always lived in Canada? *fails at questions* Or where are your parents from?
And I don't think I want to sleep on a $159.99 pillow. O.O;;

Date: 2008-08-29 08:59 pm (UTC)I was born in China, then moved to the States for almost two years, and then came to Canada -- I've been living in Canada for about...thirteen years now. :)
Maybe it's super luxurious! ...well, I wouldn't pay that much for a pillow unless it comes with really super-duper dreams every night. XD

Date: 2008-08-30 09:54 am (UTC)haha, yeah, I often wait to finish the sentence. :P Of course, it definitely is more annoying with fic...there's a definition application with firefox, I think, where you can highlight the text, right click, and get the definition. At least, I'm pretty sure there is...I just wish I remembered to use it myself XD;
haha, nah. XP Not all Chinese people are good at math. :D I can give you more than a few of my classmates in China who sucked. :P Anyway, the GRE is like a souped-up version of the SAT (although I don't think you took that?). The test itself is on a computer, and it adjusts difficulty level based on whether you answer correctly or incorrectly. :P I'm just too lazy to study, so...yeah, overseas. XD
OMG WHAT BRAND XDDDDD
And haha, one of the postgrad programmes I'm considering is in Sydney. :P I have to make sure none of them require the GRE, though, or my life will suck. :3

Date: 2008-08-31 03:48 am (UTC)Ooh, that sounds like a handy add-on! I think I shall google it.
Nope, no SATs for me, but yeah, I'm familiar with the set up of the GREs. I'm not looking forward to taking it. X3
IDK D:!!
So far away! So you're basically looking into everywhere except North America. ;)
