Haha, I haven't thought about it until I found myself in a 3-D fandom and wondering what the heck I was supposed to do. XD I've seen 3-D characters drawn well (and recognizable) in 2-D form (I've seen a bunch of House MD chibis and caricatures that were done superbly well), but you're right, it takes a load of talent to pull it off.
