I went to China by myself two summers ago and it wasn't too tough. Beijing and Shanghai (and other major cities, I'm sure) have English instructions in their subways and the signs all have pin yin -- and most people know at least a few words of English. If I ever do a tour-thing like in Yunnan or some other rural area though, I'd probably go with an English-speaking tour group. :D;;
